President Lincoln’s Cottage
Feel connected to the past by visiting President Lincoln’s Cottage. Lincoln spent much of his presidency at this cottage and even developed the Emancipation Proclamation while living here. Group and private tours are available as well as educational programs and exhibits. Visit this historic site near Fort Totten with just a 10 minute drive from The Modern.
Fort Totten Park
Historical for its fort named after James Totten during the Civil War. Located close to Silver Springs, MD this fort was used by Union Army fighting to protect Washington DC. Now this park is home to natural recreational trails. You can find this park less than 10 minutes from The Modern.
African American Civil War Museum
The African American Civil War Museum recognizes the contribution of the 209,145 United States Colored Troops (USCT). You’ll find artifacts, documents, primary sources and technology from the Civil War to Civil Rights period. Learn about the stories and largely unknown role of the USCT with a 20 minute drive from The Modern.
